Methodology v1.0
GridLens Methodology
This document explains how GridLens calculates each intelligence indicator, which data sources we use, and the limitations of our approach. We publish this methodology in full so that users and their professional advisers can understand and validate the basis for every score and indicator we produce.

Grid Capacity Map
WHAT IT SHOWS
Every UK substation coloured Green (available capacity), Amber (limited capacity), or Red (constrained) based on total MW queued relative to substation capacity, project count, and Gate 2 proportion.
DATA SOURCE
NESO TEC Register (transmission). Published via NESO API. Six DNO Embedded Capacity Registers (distribution). Refreshed Tuesday and Friday at 09:00 UTC.
CLASSIFICATION THRESHOLDS
Red >= 6.5/10, Amber 3.5–6.4/10, Green < 3.5/10.
2
Connection Risk Score
WHAT IT SHOWS
A composite score from 0 to 10 representing the relative risk of delay or non-delivery for new connection applications at a given substation. 10 = highest risk. 0 = lowest risk.
CALCULATION
Weighted sum of: Project count (30%), Total MW queued (25%), Latest connection date (25%), Gate 1 proportion (20%).
LIMITATION
Relative indicator only. Does not predict individual project outcomes. Users should treat this as a screening indicator, not a definitive assessment.
3
Adjusted Connection Date
WHAT IT SHOWS
A realistic connection date estimate adjusted for historical slippage, expressed as P50 and P90 probability range.
CALCULATION
Average annual slippage rate per GSP calculated from longitudinal data. Adjusted date = stated date + (avg slippage × years remaining).
LIMITATION
Historical slippage patterns do not guarantee future performance.
4
Broken Dates Tracker
WHAT IT SHOWS
Every instance where a connection date has moved forward (slipped) since the previous published version.
CALCULATION
Automated comparison between each new TEC Register publication and the previous version.
LIMITATION
Depends on accuracy of NESO TEC Register.
5
Curtailment Risk Score
WHAT IT SHOWS
How frequently a substation has been subject to constraint management actions by NESO, and estimated impact on annual generation revenue.
DATA SOURCE
NESO Balancing Mechanism Reports API. Historical constraint events matched to geographic grid zones.
LIMITATION
Inherently forward-looking. Historical patterns are indicative only.
